The UNhealthy Truth

This insightful book by Robyn O'brien, had me asking lots of questions.  As a mom, this book is very relatable.  She talks about the rise in food related allergies, asthma and ADHD and the correlation with the food industry and all the hidden, untested ingredients.  Robyn is truly a pioneer and was very brave in her quest for information after her daughter had an allergic reaction to eggs.  What she uncovers in monumental.  The relationship between the government agencies and Monsanto and Kraft is very scary.  She suggests making small changes that set the stage for bigger ones.  It's all about transition for your family.  Less bad, more good and lives by an 80/20 rule.  This book was what drove me to eliminate dairy for my eczema prone son, and he is now eczema and steroid cream free!!  It is impossible not to be moved by this book.

Wheat Belly

I read Wheat Belly, by William Davis, as suggested to me by a friend.  I borrowed it from the library, but ended up buying because there are several things I wanted to be able to reference later.  I also wanted to have it to loan out to my friends, who were skeptical.  Doctor Davis is a cardiologist who began recommending wheat removal in his patients and saw drastic results in weight and cholesterol.  This book is very well researched and goes behind the scenes of bread and pasta and looks at the science of how it turns to sugar and promotes visceral fat, a.k.a. the Wheat Belly.  He talks about the history of wheat and how it has morphed into this mass produced, over-processed monster, that is harming us all in more than one way.  He says that wheat actually inhibits absorption of essential nutrients and is the source of a lot of gastrointestinal upset, premature aging, neurological damage, acne, and the list goes on.  He also compares addictive properties of wheat to those in heroine.  Wheat makes you crave not only more wheat, but more of everything, and increases your tolerance as well, making you need to eat more to get the same euphoria.  Break your addiction to wheat and read Wheat Belly now!

Why We Get Fat: And What To Do About It

I read Why We Get Fat on the recommendation from my boss.  He suggested it to me in February 2013, but I didn't actually get to checking it out until April 2013.  Once I started reading, I was floored by all of the information in between the covers of this book.  I went into it with absolutely zero preconceived notions as to the content, just that it was going to be unconventional.  What I found out about the conventional American diet was probably the most amazing part.  What most Americans eat can hardly be considered food.  Most of everything we eat is a shell of itself with so many unhealthy additives that you would be amazed how little we know what it can and does do to us.  What we put into our bodies is literally killing us from the inside out and we usually don't know it until it is too late to reverse it.  Grab this book from the library, book store, Amazon...wherever!  It is a great read and is a small investment in your future and your long-term health!
